Rajasthan is the largest state in India by area. It is located in the northwest part of India. It covers large parts of the Great Indian Desert (Thar Desert). The state has borders with Pakistan to the west, Gujarat to its southwest, Madhya Pradesh to its southeast, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana and Punjab towards the northeast.
The Aravalli Range- one the world's oldest mountain ranges, nests the only popular hill station of Rajasthan- Mount Abu. These are well known for the Dilwara Temples, a sacred pilgrimage for the Jain religion. One of the famous spots to visit in Eastern Rajasthan is the Keoladeo National Park near Bharatpur, a World Heritage Site known for its bird life and fauna. Rajasthan also has two national tiger reserves, Ranthambore and Sariska Tiger Reserve and also a famous temple in the Khatu, Sikar district dedicated to Khatu Shyam Ji. The state of Rajasthan was formed on 30 March 1949. The region unit then was known as Rajputana consisting of erstwhile princely states ruled mainly by Rajputs.
Jaipur is the capital city and the largest in the state. Geographical features of Jaipur include the Thar Desert along north-western Rajasthan and termination of river- Ghaggar near Kalibanga of the Indus Valley Civilization. These are some of the oldest discovered in the Indian subcontinent so far.
